When homeowners consider purchasing new replacement windows in San Jose, CA, energy efficiency needs to be a top priority.
In the year 2018, too many homeowners are living in homes with old, outdated windows without realizing how much money they’re costing them, monthly. In fact, they may be horrified to learn that outdated, poorly maintained, or deteriorating windows can leak as much as 35-40% of the heat and air conditioning in their homes.
Of course, this leads to more than just a few uncomfortably hot or chilly days indoors. Most concerning is that these old windows are responsible for increased heating and cooling bills. To put this into perspective, this statistic means that many homeowners are paying a heating/cooling bill to condition the outside air.
What Homeowners Should Know First
A window’s energy efficiency is measured by what is called the “U-Factor.” This factor ranges from .15 to .30—the higher the number, the less heat the window retains. So, for homeowners living in a mixed climate like we have here in San Jose, a U-Factor around .25-.27 is ideal.
Now, beyond the U-Factor, there are many features a window replacement can have to improve its energy efficiency. Keep reading.
ENERGY STAR Certified
For a window to be certified by the prestigious ENERGY STAR classification, it must have the following attributes:
- A U-Factor between .15-.26
- A specified air infiltration rate (.05 or lower)
- Visible transmittance (this measures its capability of allowing in light through the glass) no less than .4 (triple pane) or .5 (double pane)
- Resist condensation at a specified rate
- Solar heat gain coefficient (measures how warmed by the sun the interior of the home can become through the glass) recommended at .25.
Multiple Glass Panes
Single pane windows are almost obsolete in the home industry these days—for good reason. Double and triple pane windows have replaced them:
- Double pane glass: usually twice as efficient as single pane window glass.
- Triple pane glass: this option is the perfect San Jose, CA window replacement option for those wanting their homes to be supremely energy efficient. Though these window replacements are significantly more costly than other options, they come with the best U-Factor and very little energy loss.
To save money, consider adding triple pane windows only in the rooms of your home that are most prone to energy loss and sun exposure.
Gas-Filled Panes of Glass
Gas like argon and krypton are often offered as a customization option to add extra insulation to windows. Both of these are slow moving, nontoxic, colorless, and odorless gases which pose no threat to you or your family. And, this energy efficient option is quite affordable.
