It’s that time of year again—finally! The kiddos are out of school and the days are nice and looooong. Here in San Jose, the temps are already HOT HOT HOT! Hopefully, you aren’t sweating indoors and receiving inflated energy bills for your air conditioning. If you are, though, perhaps it’s time to “summarize” your home!

That’s right. Summerize. It’s a real thing. You know how those Northern Folk “winterize” their homes? Well, we Californians have to “summerize” ours!

So, how do you do that? The experts here at The Screen Shop can tell you how. Keep reading for some tips on summer-proofing your home!

Think beyond to AC
Sure, your air conditioning unit can be a lifesaver during these hot months, but you shouldn’t rely solely on it. In fact, being of the mind that “only the air conditioning can keep me cool” is a farce. There’s more you can do to your home to keep cool—and to take the stress off of your AC unit! Here are a few suggestions:

  • Plant things. The more shade you can create close to your home, the better! If you plan to live in your home for the long-haul, plant a few trees in the yard that will one day provide shade from the intense sun we get here.
  • Consider an overhang. Again, this will help to create shade around your home. An overhang at your front door, a wrap-around porch, and window awnings are all examples of shade-providers.
  • Get your windows upgraded. Energy-efficient windows can make a world of difference in your home. If your current windows are old and outdated, they aren’t probably doing you any favors. Have you had them checked? It is possible that your windows are creating a heavy load for your AC unit if they are leaking air or aren’t at least double-paned. If you are unsure, our experts here at The Screen Shop would be happy to meet with you and discuss the ways to know! Many of your fellow San Jose residents have upgraded to our high-end vinyl windows and experienced an immediate difference in their monthly air conditioning costs!
  • Add insulation. Unfortunately, a lot of homes in this area are lacking in insulation. Though it may seem counter-intuitive to add this in order to prep for the hot temps, it’s not! The better insulated your walls and ceiling are, the less chance there is for the cool, conditioned air to leak out!
  • Get a white roof. That’s right—paint it or have it redone with white shingles. This is a game changer.

The time is now to get your home ready for the HOT HOT HOT temperatures ahead! Do yourself a favor and consider making a few of these changes to your home so you can stay cool this summer—Your AC unit will thank you! And, if it is time to upgrade your windows, give our team here at The Screen Shop a call!
